100 Peak Portraits

100 Peak Portraits is a cinematic photography series capturing 100 unforgettable mountains — each in a single, authentic frame. No composites. No AI. No shortcuts. Just real places, real light, and the effort it takes to stand there.

This project is as much about the journey as it is about the image. Some of these peaks I’ve dreamed of for years, others I’ve never heard of until they appeared on my map. Each portrait begins with research and planning, followed by the work of getting there — hiking miles of trail, camping high in alpine basins, sometimes enduring harsh weather — all for the chance at one moment of perfect light. Each final portrait stands as a record of a real place at a real moment in time.

Why 100?

Over the years, I realized my favorite photographs weren’t taken from the roadside or with the longest lens — they were the ones made when I went deep into the mountains, often with a wide lens, where the land feels vast and immersive. Choosing to commit to 100 portraits is both a challenge and a framework. It pushes me to explore farther, think more intentionally about composition, and tell the story of each peak in a way that does it justice.

In the Age of AI

We live in a time when images can be generated in seconds, without ever stepping foot in the wild. I believe that makes the stories behind real photographs more valuable than ever. The 100 Peak Portraits project is my way of doubling down on authenticity — putting in the miles, braving the cold, and chasing the fleeting moments of natural light that no algorithm can recreate. These portraits aren’t just seen, they’re earned.

From Camera to Print

Part of this mission is to take these images out of the digital realm and into the physical world. Each Peak Portrait is offered as a limited edition of 100 prints, signed and numbered. Once sold out, that portrait will never be printed again. Every print is made with archival materials so it can be enjoyed for decades — a tangible connection to a place, a time, and the story behind it.

One Mountain at a Time

The journey began with Mount of the Holy Cross in Colorado, a peak steeped in history and myth. From there, I’ll travel to mountains across the Rockies, the Sierra Nevada, the Cascades, and beyond — eventually seeking peaks on other continents. Whether well-known or hidden, each one will get its own portrait, its own story, and its own place in this growing collection.

100 portraits. 100 stories. 100 real moments in wild places.

About Kemper Simpich

Kemper Simpich is a landscape photographer based in Woodland Park, Colorado, where the Rocky Mountains are both his backyard and his inspiration. Growing up in nearby Colorado Springs, he found his passion for photography while climbing the state’s 14ers — long, exhausting days that rewarded him with light, perspective, and the challenge of capturing it all in a single frame.

For Kemper, photography is about more than making a beautiful image; it’s about preserving a real place and a real moment in time. He wants viewers to feel as if they could step straight into the scene — to smell the alpine air, hear the wind in the pines, and sense the scale of the peaks around them. His work is rooted in authenticity, using the camera to connect people with landscapes exactly as they were experienced.

When he’s not in the mountains with a camera, Kemper is a husband to his wife, Emily, and a father of two. He has a love for history podcasts, the world of The Lord of the Rings, and dreams of one day standing before K2, camera in hand.
